Het pand stamt uit 1566 en was oorspronkelijk een patriciërswoning. De gevel is gemaakt in Renaissance-stijl. Aan de zijkant van het gebouw in de Tinnergietersteeg staat met behulp van de muurankers het jaartal weergegeven.

De gevel bevat verschillende beeldhouwwerken. Een ervan toont een kersttafereel met de tekst 'Dit is in Bethlehem'. Naar verluidt komt de steen uit het Minderbroedersklooster in de Arkelstraat (waar ook enkele martelaren van Gorcum gewoond hebben), een termijnhuis van de Utrechtse vestiging. Toen het klooster werd afgebroken na de verovering van de stad door de Watergeuzen is deze steen uiteindelijk opgenomen in het pand aan de Gasthuisstraat. Boven de ingang staat de tekst: "Vreest den Heer, doet Hem eer; want den dach van sterven haest Hem seer 1566".

Het huis werd tussen 1910 en 1912 ingrijpend gerestaureerd. De Historische Vereniging ’Oud-Gorcum’ vestigde er daarna een museum in, met de collectie van de vereniging, die bestond uit schilderijen, tekeningen, zilverwerk en dergelijke. Het gebouw werd in 1982 door de gemeente Gorinchem gekocht voor één gulden van de vereniging Oud Gorcum en benoemde ook een conservator. Daarbij werd per 31 maart 1983 de gehele collectie overgenomen door middel van een bruikleenovereenkomst voor 50 jaar. Het meeste beeldhouwwerk werd vernieuwd bij een nieuwe restauratie tussen 1984 en 1985.

De gemeente ondervond na verloop van tijd dat de wettelijke eisen aan musea veranderden en bovendien konden er geen grote tentoonstellingen worden gehouden. Mede daarom is het museum in 1995 verhuisd naar het oude stadhuis aan de Grote Markt, onder de naam Gorcums museum. Dat kwam vrij omdat de ambtenaren naar een nieuw stadhuis verhuisden. De historische collectie is nu te bezichtigen op de eerste en derde etage.

Anno 2021 is er een zelfstandige literaire boekhandel in gevestigd de Mandarijn en heeft de Historische Vereniging ’Oud-Gorcum’ er zijn vergaderruimte. Er is een Stichting Vrienden van "Dit Is in Bethlehem".

Boekhandel De Mandarijn is een zelfstandige boekhandel in het oude stadscentrum van Gorinchem en heeft een gevarieerd aanbod boeken in huis. In de winkel vindt u de nieuwste romans uit binnen- en buitenland en non-fictie met het accent op geschiedenis, biografieën en natuur. Ook hebben we een collectie engelstalige boeken. Middelbare schoolleerlingen hebben o.a de keuze uit thrillers en romans voor de jeugd. Voor kinderen is in onze winkel een ruim assortiment prentenboeken, voorleesboeken, boeken voor beginnende lezers en lezers met het niveau van groep 6 tot en met 8.

The building dates from 1566 and was originally a patrician residence. The facade is made in Renaissance style. On the side of the building in the Tinnergietersteeg, the year is displayed with the aid of the wall anchors.

The facade contains several sculptures. One of them shows a Christmas scene that reads 'This is in Bethlehem'. The stone is said to come from the Friars Minor Monastery in Arkelstraat (where some of Gorcum's martyrs also lived), a term house of the Utrecht settlement. When the monastery was demolished after the conquest of the city by the Watergeuzen, this stone was eventually incorporated into the building on Gasthuisstraat. Above the entrance is the text: "Fear the Lord, do Him glory: for the thought of death hasteneth Him sore 1566".

The house was extensively restored between 1910 and 1912. The Historical Association 'Oud-Gorcum' then established a museum in it, with the association's collection, which consisted of paintings, drawings, silverware and the like. The building was bought in 1982 by the municipality of Gorinchem for one guilder from the association Oud Gorcum and also appointed a curator. As of March 31, 1983, the entire collection was taken over by means of a 50-year loan agreement. Most of the sculpture was renewed in a new restoration between 1984 and 1985.

Over time, the municipality found that the legal requirements for museums changed and, moreover, no major exhibitions could be held. Partly for this reason, the museum moved in 1995 to the old town hall on the Grote Markt, under the name Gorcums museum. That became available because the officials moved to a new town hall. The historical collection is now on display on the first and third floors.

In 2021 there is an independent literary bookshop located in the Mandarijn and the Historical Association 'Oud-Gorcum' has its meeting room. There is a Friends of "This Is in Bethlehem" Foundation.

Bookstore De Mandarijn is an independent bookstore in the old city center of Gorinchem and has a varied selection of books in house. In the shop you will find the latest novels from home and abroad and non-fiction with an emphasis on history, biographies and nature. We also have a collection of English-language books. Secondary school students can choose from thrillers and novels for young people. For children, our store has a wide range of picture books, reading books, books for beginning readers and readers with the level of group 6 to 8.
