The obelisk section is about 2' high, standing upon a concrete base. A soldier holding a rifle is depicted -- that may be an attempt to render him in a tricorn hat -- and below is:

PVT.
C. 170978.
Co. C 24. inf.

The base is crumbling a bit in the back, but the inscription on the front is still fairly legible:

Evins Busby

U.S.A. Soldier

Born Nov. 25, 1895
Died Mar. 16, 1919

----------

Findagrave (see below) doesn't say much about him, but the ever-helpful Texas World War I Honor Roll site has a listing, noting that he was born in Cotton Gin (south of here) and died in Deming, NM. He was a Buffalo Soldier in the U.S. Army, and presumably, he was serving at Camp Cody at the time of his passing. He may also have been among those who died of the influenza pandemic that began in 1918.

Date of Birth: 11/25/1895

Date of Death: 3/16/1919

Material: Concrete
