NL Op de voorkant van het oude stadhuis van Gorinchem prijkt het stadswapen van Gorinchem. Dit imposante gebouw is in 1860 gebouwd en is tegenwoordig in gebruik door het Gorcums museum.

Het wapen van Gorinchem is het wapen van de gemeente Gorinchem in de Nederlandse provincie Zuid-Holland. Het is op 24 juli 1816 door de Hoge Raad van Adel gedeeltelijk bevestigd en op 24 maart 1982 aan de gemeente toegekend.

Het wapen heeft de volgende blazoenering:
In goud een gekanteelde poort van keel, gedekt met 3 daken van azuur, waarop 4 naar links waaiende vanen van keel, in de poort een opgetrokken valhek van sabel en in de schildpunt een schildje van zilver, beladen met 2 beurtelings gekanteelde dwarsbalken van keel. Het schild gedekt met een gouden kroon van 3 bladeren en 2x3 parels en gehouden door 2 gouden leeuwen, getongd en genageld van keel. Wapenspreuk: Fortes Creantur Fortibus in Latijnse letters van keel op een lint van goud.

De heraldische kleuren keel, azuur en sabel staan voor de kleuren rood, blauw en zwart. De in de heraldiek aangegeven richting is gezien vanuit de persoon achter het schild; voor de beschouwer juist andersom, hierdoor wijzen de vanen op de daken van het poortgebouw in werkelijkheid naar rechts.

De wapenspreuk van Gorinchem, Fortes creantur fortibus ("Sterken brengen sterken voort"), verschijnt voor het eerst in 1749 in een door de stad gedrukt boek. De woorden zijn waarschijnlijk ontleend aan Horatius' Carmina "Fortes creantur fortibus ac bonis" dat vrij vertaald betekent: sterken kunnen slechts worden voortgebracht door sterken en goeden.

The coat of arms of Gorinchem is the coat of arms of the municipality of Gorinchem in the Dutch province of South Holland. It was partially confirmed by the High Council of Nobility on July 24, 1816 and awarded to the municipality on March 24, 1982.

The weapon has the following blazon:
In gold a crenellated gules gate, covered with 3 azure roofs, on which 4 gules blowing to the left, in the gate a raised portcullis of saber and in the shield tip a shield of silver, loaded with 2 alternately crenellated gules crossbars. The shield covered with a golden crown of 3 leaves and 2x3 pearls and held by 2 golden lions, tongued and nailed throat. Coat of arms: Fortes Creantur Fortibus in Latin letters of keel on a ribbon of gold.

The heraldic colors gules, azure and saber stand for the colors red, blue and black. The direction indicated in the heraldry is seen from the person behind the shield; for the viewer it is the other way around, because of this the vanes on the roofs of the gatehouse actually point to the right.

Gorinchem's motto, Fortes creantur fortibus ("The strong bring forth the strong"), first appears in 1749 in a book printed by the city. The words are probably taken from Horace's Carmina "Fortes creantur fortibus ac bonis" which roughly translated means: the strong can only be produced by the strong and the good.
