"IN THE MARSHES AND ESTUARIES
Habitats in the Texas Coastal Bend region are dramatically affected by the mixture of freshwater and saltwater, creating estuaries and marshes. Coastal marshes provide cover and a rich source of nutrients for large numbers of shorebirds, wading birds, and other wildlife. Invertebrates and fish are plentiful here, and provide food for birds and mammals.
A shifting mix
most seasons bring shorebirds to the tidal flats and marshes. The greatest variety in concentrations occur during spring and fall migrations, but there is a large variety of winter residence. Look for shorebirds probing in the mud along the shoreline.
A trip to the marsh
when water levels are low, a variety of wildlife venture into the marsh. Look for tracks made by these animals. Take time to watch. You might see a heron as it searches for food in the shallow water, or a pelican as it dives to catch a fish in deeper water. Salt marsh and tidal flat habitats are disappearing at an alarming rate along the Texas coast due to rising sea levels and development, yet they are an invaluable resource for the wildlife that depend on them.
