One of several zinc headstones at Old Town Cemetery in Indianola, it's clear that these zinc headstones have what it takes to survive the devastating hurricanes that strike this part of Texas so often.

In fact, the hurricanes of 1875 and 1885 wiped Indianola, then the second busiest deepwater port in Texas, off the map. After yellow fever epidemic in 1867, a devastating hurricane in 1875, years of rebuilding to recover from the 1875 storm, then for the the hurricane in 1885 to wash the town away AGAIN - that's when Indianola was abandoned and is now a ghost town.

Old Town Cemetery is located just a few yards from the waters of Matagorda Bay. Blasterz estimate that about 80% of the tombstones here were lost in storms, but many, mostly zinc, survived.
