Het Huygensgebouw is een bouwwerk in de Nederlandse stad Nijmegen dat deel uitmaakt van de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen. Het gebouw huisvest de faculteit natuurwetenschappen, wiskunde en informatica (FNWI) en is vernoemd naar de 17e-eeuwse wetenschapper Christiaan Huygens. De bouw ervan begon in 2002. In 2005 werden de eerste twee vleugels in gebruik genomen en op 8 mei 2007 werd het gebouw officieel geopend door Koningin Beatrix door het in beweging stellen van de Slinger van Foucault in de ingangshal.
Het Huygensgebouw bestaat uit vier vleugels die door middel van transparante tussenstukken met elkaar zijn verbonden. De loopafstanden zijn kort en de indeling van het gebouw is flexibel. Hierdoor biedt het ruimte om mee te groeien met een academische gemeenschap die constant in ontwikkeling is. Het ontwerp is een open concept, gebaseerd op een stadsplattegrond van vier wijken, met elkaar verbonden door een hoofdstraat. Het thema van de straat als drager van het complex is ontworpen om een beeld van activiteit, dynamiek en ruimtelijke beleving te geven.
Verbinding en ontmoeting
De straat vormt een ontmoetingsplek, een verblijfs- en verkeerszone van waaruit alle afdelingen bereikbaar zijn. Aan de straat zijn algemene voorzieningen gelegen als de bibliotheek en het studielandschap. Het hart van het gebouw wordt gevormd door het centrale plein. Hier bevinden zich het restaurant en de entree, gelegen aan de Heyendaalseweg. Vides, gesloten en open gevels en veel daglicht geven plein en straat een open, vriendelijk en ruimtelijk karakter. Het gebruik van warme materialen en kleuraccenten versterkt dit effect. Door het veelvuldig gebruik van glas biedt het gebouw een open inkijk aan de voorbijgangers en wordt daarmee als het ware een etalage van de wetenschap.
Transparatie en geborgenheid
De meer besloten vleugels vormen een contrast met de open lichtstraat. Hier zijn de werkplekken voor de medewerkers, de laboratoria en de onderwijsruimten te vinden. Het zonlicht kan geweerd worden door de deels sluitbare lamellen. Indien nodig kunnen deze volledig gesloten worden, ter verduistering van de ruimten. Door gebruik te maken van deze lamellen krijgt het gebouw op afstand een sculpturaal karakter. Van dichtbij opent de architectuur zich meer en meer. Oogcontact tussen passant en student of medewerker wordt hierdoor optimaal. Onzichtbaar maar wel aanwezig zijn tenslotte de ondergrondse voorzieningen om te parkeren en te fietsen.

The Huygens Building is a structure in the Dutch city of Nijmegen that is part of the Radboud University Nijmegen. The building houses the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computer Science (FNWI) and is named after the 17th-century scientist Christiaan Huygens. Its construction started in 2002. In 2005 the first two wings were inaugurated and on 8 May 2007 the building was officially opened by Queen Beatrix by setting the Foucault Pendulum in motion in the entrance hall.
The Huygens building consists of four wings that are connected to each other by means of transparent intermediate pieces. The walking distances are short and the layout of the building is flexible. As a result, it offers room to grow with an academic community that is constantly developing. The design is an open concept, based on a city map of four neighbourhoods, connected by a main street. The theme of the street as the carrier of the complex is designed to give an image of activity, dynamics and spatial experience.
Connection and meeting
The street forms a meeting place, a residential and traffic zone from which all departments are accessible. General facilities such as the library and the study landscape are located on the street. The heart of the building is formed by the central square. Here are the restaurant and the entrance, located on the Heyendaalseweg. Voids, closed and open facades and plenty of daylight give the square and street an open, friendly and spacious character. The use of warm materials and color accents enhances this effect. Due to the frequent use of glass, the building offers passers-by an open view and thus becomes, as it were, a showcase for science.
Transparency and security
The more closed wings form a contrast with the open skylight. Here you will find the workplaces for the employees, the laboratories and the teaching areas. The sunlight can be kept out by the partially closable slats. If necessary, these can be completely closed to darken the rooms. The use of these slats gives the building a sculptural character from a distance. Up close, the architecture opens up more and more. Eye contact between passer-by and student or employee is thus optimal. Invisible but still present are the underground facilities for parking and cycling.
