In Gorinchem zag ik bij het parkje bij het Indië-monument twee opvallende stenen ornamenten. Het bleken de toppen van zogenaamde monniken te zijn. Dat zo’n monnik op de achtergrond nog goed zichtbaar was op het vestingwerk had ik toen niet door. Anders had ik wel een mooie foto gemaakt van de ‘beer’ (dam met steile rug) met de twee ‘monniken’ (obstakels op de beer). Het blijkt best wel uniek te zijn dat zo’n structuur nog bewaard is gebleven. In de onderstaande tekst wordt het een en ander verklaard over deze grappige vestingstructuren:

Wie voor het eerst de uitdrukking 'een monnik op een beer' hoort, zal daarbij ongetwijfeld boeiende beelden voor ogen krijgen. De kans is klein dat hij denkt aan een muur die dwars door een gracht gebouwd is en aan de bovenzijde merkwaardige 'torentjes' heeft. Toch zal dit meestal wel bedoeld zijn, wanneer déze monnik ter sprake komt. De muur is de 'beer' en maakt deel uit van een vesting. Het doel is het voorkomen dat bij een beleg de vijand vrijuit door de gracht kan varen. De bovenzijde heeft de vorm van een ezelsrug om te voorkomen dat ongewenste personen er overheen lopen. Maar dan is schrijlings over de gracht heen schuiven toch nog mogelijk. Dat werd voorkomen door 'scheurbroeken', stekelige hindernissen, of, veel beter, door een 'monnik'. De monnik is een stevig rond torentje dat boven op de beer staat en zo dik is dat niemand er omheen kan klimmen. Wie het toch probeert, glijdt via de schuine helling de gracht in. Soms heeft een beer enkele monniken achter elkaar. Het metselwerk is vaak voorzien van een sierlijke top.

In Gorinchem I saw two striking stone ornaments in the small park near the Indies monument. It turned out to be the tops of so-called monks. Whoever hears the expression 'a monk on a bear' for the first time will undoubtedly see fascinating images. There is little chance that he is thinking of a wall that has been built right through a moat and that has remarkable 'turrets' at the top. Yet this will usually be intended when this monk is mentioned. The wall is the 'bear' and is part of a fortress. The aim is to prevent the enemy from sailing freely through the moat during a siege. The top has the shape of a donkey's back to prevent unwanted people from walking over it. But then sliding astride the canal is still possible. This was prevented by 'tear pants', spiky obstacles, or, much better, by a 'monk'. The monk is a sturdy round turret that sits on top of the bear and is so thick that no one can climb around it. Those who try anyway, slide into the canal via the sloping slope. Sometimes a bear has several monks in a row. The masonry often has an ornate top.
