In einem Kreisverkehr am Wachtbergring bei Berkum steht seit September 2019 eine auffällige und sehenswerte Drachenskulptur. Sie stammt vom Wachtberger Künstler Willi Reiche in Zusammenarbeit mit Schülern der Hans-Dietrich-Genscher-Schule in Berkum.

Anlass war das 50-jährige Jubiläum der Gemeinde Wachtberg. Wachtberg ist eine Gemeinde im Süden des Rhein-Sieg-Kreises, südlich von Bonn an der Grenze zu Rheinland-Pfalz gelegen. Wachtberg besteht aus 13 kleineren und größeren Dörfern mit Berkum im Zentrum. Das Wappentier ist ein feuerspeiender Drache, was auf die kurkölnischen Burggrafen zu Drachenfels zurückgeht, die diese Gegend im Mittelalter verwalteten. Daher wird die Umgebung auch Drachenfelser Ländchen genannt.

Das Wappentier wird in dieser Drachenskulptur imposant und naturrealistisch dargestellt. Die fünf Meter hohe Statue besteht aus einem Gerüst aus Eisenrundstäben, das mit Schuppen, Zähnen und Krallen aus Gratschrott bestückt worden ist, einem Abfallprodukt aus Schmieden. Abends wird der Drache beleuchtet.

Im Juni 2021 wurde der Drache vom Gemeinderat "Godart von Wachtberg" getauft, angelehnt an den Ritter "Godart de Drachenvels", einem der Burggrafen von Drachenfels. Die Drachenstatue gilt als neues Wahrzeichen Wachtbergs und soll ortsübergreifend die Identifikation der Gemeinde fördern.
Since September 2019, there has been a striking and worth seeing dragon sculpture in a roundabout on the Wachtbergring near Berkum. It comes from the Wachtberg artist Willi Reiche in collaboration with students from the Hans Dietrich Genscher School in Berkum.

The occasion was the 50th anniversary of the municipality of Wachtberg. Wachtberg is a community in the south of the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis, south of Bonn on the border with Rhineland-Palatinate. Wachtberg consists of 13 smaller and larger villages with Berkum in the center. The heraldic animal is a fire-breathing dragon, which goes back to the Electoral Cologne burgraves of Drachenfels, who administered this area in the Middle Ages. That's why the area is also called Drachenfelser Ländchen.

The heraldic animal is imposingly and realistically depicted in this dragon sculpture. The five meter high statue consists of a frame made of round iron rods, which has been fitted with scales, teeth and claws made from scrap, a by-product of forging. In the evening the dragon is illuminated.

In June 2021, the dragon was named "Godart von Wachtberg" by the municipal council, based on the knight "Godart de Drachenvels", one of the burgraves of Drachenfels. The dragon statue is regarded as Wachtberg's new landmark and is intended to promote community identification across its villages.
