ASHLAND (alt. 560, pop. 1375), 51.9 m., limited accommodations, is a little town with few residences of size. In its early days Ashland was a
part of Holderness; it was incorporated independently in 1868. Grist
mills and sawmills were operated here in 1770. Today the manufacture
of tissue paper and of woolen goods are the chief industries of the community.

Ashland itself is a delightful old mill town. It remains the look and feel of the 1900's with just enough new structures to bring it into the 21st century.
The Ashland Gristmill and Dam are a historic former industrial facility in the heart of Ashland, New Hampshire. Built in 1903 on the site of an older mill, the gristmill demonstrates the continuing viability of wood framing for mill buildings in an era when it had become uncommon. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. It has been converted to professional offices.
