Interestingly, the You Are Here map has south at the top of the map. Newcastle Centre and this sign are on the sea side (east side) of Main Street (also known as Central Promenade).
Long ago, there was a castle here. On the footprint of that castle, the Annesley Arms Hotel was built in 1835. Today, that hotel is home to Newcastle Centre and the tourist information centre. Locally, this place is known as the Annesley Mansions.
