In de achterkant van het berenverblijf in Dierenpark Amersfoort is een kleine waterval. De waterval is smal maar wel hoog voor Nederlandse begrippen, ongeveer 6 m. Het berenverblijf ligt direct rechts na de ingang van het park.

De brilberen, die hun naam danken aan een bril-silhouet rondom hun ogen, zijn afkomstig uit een Duits dierenpark. In Amersfoort wonen zij in het voormalige bruine berenverblijf. Dat verblijf is flink aangepast. De broers, Teju en Ariba, zijn drie jaar en echte belhamels. De dieren zijn heel nieuwsgierig, ravotten veel met elkaar, klimmen graag en zitten bijna nooit stil. De brilbeer is zelfs de enige berensoort die nooit in winterslaap gaat. De beren hebben een verblijf gekregen waarin zij al hun energie kwijt kunnen, de hoogte in kunnen gaan, maar waar ook ruimte is om tot rust te komen.

De brilbeer komt van oorsprong voor in de bergbossen van het Zuid-Amerikaanse Andesgebergte. De dieren zijn met hun grote voorpoten erg goede klimmers en leven dan ook voor een groot deel in de bomen. Zij gebruiken de boomtoppen als schuilplek, slaapplek en halen er hun voedsel vandaan. Door de massale bomenkap voor bijvoorbeeld houtproductie en landbouw, verliezen zij in grote snelheid steeds meer leefgebied. Bij het nieuwe berenverblijf ervaar je hoe impactvol de vernietiging is van hun oorspronkelijke leefgebied en wat je eraan kan doen om de kap tegen te gaan.

In the back of the bear enclosure in Amersfoort Zoo is a small waterfall. The waterfall is narrow but high by Dutch standards, about 6 m. The bear enclosure is located immediately to the right after the entrance of the park.

The spectacled bears, which owe their name to a spectacled silhouette around their eyes, come from a German animal park. In Amersfoort they live in the former brown bear enclosure. That residence has been considerably modified. The brothers, Teju and Ariba, are three years old and real goons. The animals are very curious, romp with each other a lot, like to climb and hardly ever sit still. In fact, the spectacled bear is the only bear species that never hibernates. The bears have been given an enclosure in which they can lose all their energy, go up in height, but where there is also room to relax.

The spectacled bear is native to the mountain forests of the South American Andes Mountains. The animals are very good climbers with their large front legs and therefore live largely in the trees. They use the treetops as a shelter, sleeping place and get their food from there. Due to the massive felling of trees for, for example, wood production and agriculture, they are losing more and more habitat at great speed. At the new bear enclosure you will experience how impactful the destruction of their original habitat is and what you can do to prevent the felling.
