Its provenance unknown, a granite slab stands on the east side of TX 148, just a little south of Petrolia, noting that you're in the general area of where North Texas's first oil strike happened, leading to the state's first gas well not long after.

The slab is about six feet tall, standing in a roadside pullout, and it looks to be a common target for vandals. Protected by a low fence of steel bars, thistles, and trash, it reads:

This discovery marked the beginning of intensive development of the gas industry in Texas. Lone Star Gas Co. built the Southwest first large-diameter, long-distance pipe line to transport gas from this gas field to Fort Worth and Dallas. Service to both cities started in 1910.

Discovered first of August 1901 by J.W. Lochridge when drilling for water. From this field the North Texas and southern Oklahoma oil development started.
