The founder of Ueno Kan-ei-ji temple made Benten Island and established Benten-do temple during 1624-1644.
At that time, people used ship to move to the island. During 1661-1672, the original bridge was built for approaching the temple.

Now the bridge, named Tenryu Bridge, was re-constructed in 1930 and it still remains.
