De Kerk has a long history and was founded in 1882 by the Roman Catholic monastic community of the Redemptorists. The church was in use by the monastic community until 1975. The building was saved during the Second World War, but in 1979 the church burned down and the spire was lost. The renovated building has been used as a student complex since 1986.

There are 110 units in Residential Building De Kerk, where 212 students and recent graduates live. The building is one of the unique student complexes of Stadswonen Rotterdam. To be eligible for a home in Woongebouw De Kerk, you must study (at EUR or a university of applied sciences in Rotterdam). There are various types of housing in the building. There are 180 rooms in two-, three- or four-person units, 36 studios and 6 cohabitation units.

There is also an active residents' association that regularly organizes parties. They organize the annual barbecue and an activity is organized on every holiday. There are also various facilities available, such as roof terraces, a party room, storage for scooters and motorcycles, a table tennis table, a table football table, food and drinks vending machine, a patio garden, washing machines and dryers and indoor bicycle sheds.
