La commune de Porto Ota est comme souvent en Corse répartie entre deux zones géographiques distinctes.
L’intérieur des terres fut la première partie peuplée et développée, autour du village de Ota. Retiré du rivage pour se protéger, les habitants étaient des agriculteurs dont le labeur d’exploitation des champs se voit encore aujourd’hui tant il a façonné les vallées. On y retrouve des traces de culture de blé, d’élevage et de maraîchage sur les contreforts qui remontent vers le village d’Evisa en empruntant les célèbres Gorges de la Spélunca.
Le paysage laisse aussi entrevoir les anciens chemins muletiers qui reliaient les différents villages de la vallée.
Cette zone est aussi dominée par des hautes montagnes. La commune est installée sous le Capo d’Ortu, superbe pointe rocheuse culminant à 1294 m.
Porto et la marine tire son nom de la rivière qui sépare la vallée : le Porto.
Un patrimoine culturel…
Cet ancien hameau d’Ota est aujourd’hui la partie la plus développée autour de la fortification ( Tour carrée de Porto) et du petit port.
Situé sur l’embouchure du Porto, sur le promontoire rocheux, ce hameau profite de sa situation au bord de la mer pour attirer près d’un tiers des visiteurs qui découvrent l’île chaque année.

Le Golfe de Porto est classé au patrimoine mondial de l’humanité par l’Unesco. On parle là du « grand golfe de Porto » allant de Piana et les Calanche au sud jusqu’à Girolata et la réserve de Scandola au nord.

La petite commune de 550 habitants l’hiver voit son visage radicalement changer en été avec l’arrivée massive de visiteurs naturellement attirés par les paysages de la région.
