Das LVR-Freilichtmuseum Kommern ist eines der größten Freilichtmuseen Europas und zeigt auf etwa 100 Hektar die Geschichte des Rheinlands. Dazu wurden rund 78 historische Häuser und Gebäude aus verschiedenen Regionen des Rheinlands abgetragen. Anschließend wurden sie anhand ihrer geographischen Herkunft zu Baugruppen zusammengestellt und hier wiederaufgebaut. Die ältesten Häuser stammen aus dem 15. Jahrhundert, die meisten sind aber aus der Preußenzeit (18. bis 19. Jahrhundert). Die meisten Gebäude sind begehbar, im Innern wird das alltägliche Leben aus der damaligen Zeit gezeigt.

Viele der Häuser im Museum haben Strohdächer, da dies die übliche Art der Bedachung für einfache Wohnhäuser aus der damaligen Zeit war. Dieses hier ist ein dreistöckiges Fachwerkhaus aus Großholbach aus dem frühen 18. Jahrhundert. Es steht in der Baugruppe Westerwald / Mittelrhein. Im Erdgeschoß hat das Museum einen Tante-Emma-Laden eingerichtet.

In der Bildergalerie sind auch Fotos von weiteren strohbedeckten Gebäuden im Freilichtmuseum, die alle sehenswert sind. Bitte beachtet, dass ein Besuch der Gebäude nur mit einem kostenpflichtigen Eintritt im Museum zu den Öffnungszeiten möglich ist. Aktuell (2022) beträgt der Eintritt für Erwachsene 9,50 Euro.

The LVR-Freilichtmuseum Kommern is one of the largest open-air museums in Europe and shows the history of the Rhineland on around 100 hectares. To do this, around 78 historic houses and buildings from various regions of the Rhineland were disassembled. They were then put together into small villages based on their geographic origin and rebuilt here. The oldest houses date from the 15th century, but most are from the Prussian period (18th to 19th centuries). Most of the buildings can be walked in, and everyday life from that time is shown inside.

Many of the houses in the museum have thatched roofs, as this was the common type of roofing for simple dwellings of the period. This one is a three-storey half-timbered house from Großholbach from the early 18th century. It is in the Westerwald / Middle Rhine building group. The museum has set up a mom-and-pop shop on the ground floor.

The picture gallery also includes photos of other thatched buildings in the open-air museum, all of which are worth seeing. Please note that a visit to the buildings is only possible with a paid entry to the museum during opening hours. Currently (2022) the entrance fee for adults is 9.50 euros.
