"This gate owes its name to the mills which once took advantage of the wind outside the fortifications, this Bel air which gave the place its name. It is part of the bastioned fortifications built between 1642 and 1647 to the south of the city walls.

The warrior decor recalls the victory of France over Spain during the Thirty Years War. This door is a monument to the glory of royalty, a sort of triumphal arch bearing the coat of arms of the sovereign in the middle of the pediment, coat of arms which were hammered during the Revolution.

Originally it had a carter door flanked by 2 pedestrian accesses. In 1855, the Military Engineering transformed the accesses into 2 cart gates and removed the drawbridges."

"Cette porte doit son nom aux moulins qui autrefois profitaient du vent hors des fortifications, ce Bel air qui donna le nom à la place. Elle fait partie des fortifications bastionnées construites entre 1642 et 1647 au sud de l'enceinte urbaine.

Le décor guerrier rappelle la victoire de la France sur l'Espagne lors de la Guerre de Trente ans. Cette porte est un monument à la gloire de la royauté, une sorte d'arc de triomphe portant les armoiries du souverain au milieu du fronton, armoiries qui furent martelées à la Révolution.

A l'origine elle possédait une porte charretière encadrée de 2 accès piétons. Le Génie militaire transforma en 1855 les accès en 2 portes charretières et supprima les ponts-levis."
