en: "The origin of Puerta Real dates back to a vast sandy area created by the course of the Darro river where there was a gateway to Nasrid Granada. Its weak structure made it necessary to rebuild it in 1515, decorating it with the coats of arms of the royal arms. The gate took its royal name from 1624, when the entourage of King Philip IV passed through it upon arrival in Granada on April 8.

The construction in the 16th century of the Puente de la Paja turned the area into a space of transition towards the new neighborhoods of expansion in the city. The extension of the bridge and its subsequent replacement by a large communication esplanade between the two banks, as well as the demolition of the gate in 1790, turned the area into a crossroads for the main streets of the incipient bourgeois city.

Today it is a reflection of the vibrant city of Granada, where citizens, students and tourists meet in the same urban space."
