William Carey Crane, namesake of both the town and the county, was born in Virginia but moved to Confederate Texas. Among other positions, he served as president of Baylor University for 22 years. He was also the first President of the Texas State Teachers Association. You will find a historical marker with this information near the entrance to the Crane County Courthouse, on the north side of the building.
