In 2017, as part of the Great River Project, a new bridge was built along Union Avenue and the nearby Elm Street Bridge and the Westfield & Northampton Railroad Bridge were restored. The area on the south end of the bridge was rebuilt as part of the Columbia Greenway and a 10' diameter compass rose was created at the south end of the old railroad bridge which is now a pedestrian and bicycle only bridge.
