A stone placard affixed to a small boulder marks the location of the first dwelling in Vermontville, Michigan. The inscription reads:
THIS MEMORIAL MARKS
THE SITE OF THE FIRST
DWELLING ERECTED BY
THE VERMONTVILLE
COLONY IN 1837.
IT WAS CALLED
"THE STATE HOUSE"
AND WAS USED TO
SHELTER THE PIONEER
FAMILIES WHILE BUILDING
THEIR OWN HOMES.
The house is no longer there and the area is solely marked by the stone and plaque.
