This statue of Moses is located at Mount Calvary Cemetery on Highpoint Drive near Coal Center, Pennsylvania. The statue is near the main entrance to the cemetery, in a row of 19 statues of saints and Old Testament prophets. The statue depicts Moses holding a stone tablet with the Roman Numerals I-X carved on it, symbolic of his receiving the Ten Commandments from God on Mount Sinai. The Ten Commandments are carved into the base of the statue.
Moses was the leader of the Hebrew people, who led them out of bondage in Egypt, through the Red Sea, and into the desert of Sinai. On Mount Sinai, Moses received the Ten Commandments from God. He led the people who would become the Israelites to the promised land, although he himself was not able to enter. Moses has long been believed to have been the author of the first five books of the Old Testament, or Torah.
