On the edge of the harbor is the bronze statue 'The Redder'. The statue is dedicated to all the killed rescuers of Hoek van Holland ('dedicated to the fallen heroes of the sea').
The statue was given the name 'Hero Death'. The statue is also called 'The Heroes of the Sea' or simply 'The Saviour'.
The statue was made by Elisa de Ridder van Mastrigt. She was born in Meerkerk in 1896 and died in 1989 in The Hague. She was educated at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague. Rescuers were killed during rescue missions in 1921 and 1929, as did a skipper of a rescue operation in 1952. The names of all rescuers who died are engraved on the plinth. On January 16, 1931, the statue was unveiled by Rypperda Wierdsma, of the Zuid Hollandse Redding Maatschappij.
