This white marble life-sized statue of Jesus Christ is in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery, in a section named for the Sermon on the Mount. The statue depicts Jesus, dressed in robes, seated and delivering his message. Found in Matthew Chapters 5-7, the Sermon on the Mount is best known for the Beatitudes and one version of the Lord's Prayer. Throughout the Sermon Jesus takes passages from scripture that would already be familiar to his audience and gives them new meanings or interpretations.

Christian doctrine holds that Jesus performed many miracles, was baptized by John, ministered and preached among the people of Israel for three years, was tried and executed by crucifixion so that his death could serve as an atonement for sin, was raised from the dead after three days, and ascended into Heaven, from where He will one day return.
