De bronzen beeldengroep van Frank Neirynck toont Prins Maurits van Nassau, bevelhebber van de Staatse troepen tijdens de Slag bij Nieuwpoort.
Prins Maurits staat in Neiryncks creatie centraal, als symbool voor een wending in de geschiedenis. De legeraanvoerder wordt hier niet als persoonlijk individu geëerd. De klemtoon ligt op zijn strategisch vernuft en de politieke reikwijdte van zijn beslissingen en daden. Vandaar dat Maurits ook eerder een perkamenten rol vasthoudt in plaats van een zwaard.
De twee figuren die hem flankeren, vormen de verpersoonlijking van een volk dat strijdt voor een bepaald ideaal.
Voor het ontwerp van het kunstwerk werd destijds een beeldenwedstrijd uitgeschreven. Frank Neirynck werd op vrijdag 23 april 1999 door de jury tot winnaar uitgeroepen. De onthulling van het kunstwerk vond plaats op zaterdag 1 juli 2000, daags voor de vierhonderste verjaardag van de Slag bij Nieuwpoort. Dat gebeurde in aanwezigheid van Eduard Röell, toenmalig ambassadeur van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden in België.
De beeldengroep stond oorspronkelijk iets meer centraal in het Prins Mauritspark, aan de ingang van de vroegere Ideeëntuintjes. Bij herwaarderingswerken aan het park werden de bronzen figuren verhuisd naar de ingang van de groenzone, met zicht op de Havengeul.

Prince Maurice of Nassau

Frank Neirynck's bronze sculpture group depicts Prince Maurice of Nassau, commander of the Staatse troops during the Battle of Nieuwpoort.
Prince Maurice is central to Neirynck's creation, symbolising a turn in history. The army commander is not honoured here as a personal individual. The emphasis is on his strategic ingenuity and the political scope of his decisions and actions. This is why Maurice is holding a parchment scroll rather than a sword.
The two figures flanking him personify a people fighting for a particular ideal.
At the time, a sculpture competition was held for the design of the work of art. Frank Neirynck was declared the winner by the jury on Friday 23 April 1999. The unveiling of the work of art took place on Saturday 1 July 2000, the day before the four hundredth anniversary of the Battle of Nieuwpoort. It took place in the presence of Eduard Röell, then Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Belgium.
The sculpture group originally stood somewhat more centrally in the Prince Mauritspark, at the entrance to the former Gardens of Ideas. When the park was re-evaluated, the bronze figures were moved to the entrance of the green zone, overlooking the Havengeul.
