"THE MONUMENT
Form and material
The monument with the Yad Vashem certificate in Nieuwlande (municipality of Hoogeveen) is a brick wall with an arch in the middle. In it a display case has been made, in which a copy of the Yad Vashem certificate lies.
THE HISTORY
The monument with the Yad Vashem certificate in Nieuwlande (municipality of Hoogeveen) commemorates the help that the inhabitants of the village gave to Jewish people in hiding during the Second World War.
In addition to the armed resistance, Nieuwlande also provided help on a large scale to people in hiding and Jewish refugees. Because of this unique, collective relief effort, the entire population of Nieuwelande was presented with a certificate of honor from the Israeli institute Yad Vashem on April 11, 1985, by the Israeli ambassador Jaacov Nechushtan.
Johannes Post was the driving force behind the resistance movement in Nieuwlande. He was born on October 4, 1906 in Hollandscheveld near Hoogeveen. During the occupation he abandoned his prosperous farm in Oosterhesselen (Drenthe) to devote himself entirely to resistance work. He played an important role, especially in the national Knokploegen (Commando Groups). Post was leader of the KP in the north of the Netherlands and undertook many sabotage actions and raids on distribution offices and prisons. On 16 July 1944 Post was executed in the dunes near Bloemendaal. The prominent member of the resistance was buried at the War Cemetery in Overveen.
The monument was unveiled in 1985."
