Reeds tijdens de oorlog werd door luitenant-generaal Michel het plan opgevat om te Wulpen een gedenkteken op te richten voor de 4de legerafdeling van het Belgisch Leger.
Dit monument werd in 1919 opgetrokken met de stenen afkomstig uit de puinen van Nieuwpoort, aangevuld met marmeren stukken van de verwoeste Lakenhalle te Ieper.
Op 11 juli 1926 werd het monument plechtig ingehuldigd door koning Albert I.
96 rechtopstaande en 9 liggende gedenkplaten staan cirkelvormig opgesteld rond de centrale gedenkzuil ter ere van baron Luitenant-generaal Baron Michel du Faing d’Aigremont, bevelhebber van de 4de legerdivisie van 1913 tot 1918. Op de gedenkplaten staan de namen van de gesneuvelde militairen.
Vooraan links aan het monument van de 4de Legerafdeling ligt een rotsblok met inscriptie van twee gedichten.
Nederlandstalig gedicht:
‘Doch wees getroost
Zie ’t oosten bloost
En Vlaand’rens zonne gaat aan ’t dagen
Vlaanderen den leeuw, "Tril oude toren
En paar uw lied met onze koren
Zing ik ben Roeland Kleppe brand
Luide trionfe in Vlaanderenland !"

De 4de legerafdeling speelde een belangrijke rol bij de verdediging van het IJzerfront. Tijdens de IJzerslag (oktober 1914) verdedigde deze afdeling de beruchte bocht van Tervaete en in april 1918 werd de Duitse aanval bij Merkem o.m. door de 4de divisie met succes afgeslagen.
Dit oorlogsgedenkteken werd in 1997 gerestaureerd door de Regie der Gebouwen.

Already during the war, lieutenant-general Michel conceived the plan to erect a memorial to the 4th army division of the Belgian Army in Wulpen.
This monument was erected in 1919 with stones from the ruins of Nieuwpoort, completed with marble pieces from the destroyed Cloth Hall in Ypres.
On 11 July 1926 the monument was solemnly inaugurated by King Albert I.
96 standing and 9 lying plaques are arranged in a circle around the central memorial column in honour of Baron Lieutenant-General Baron Michel du Faing d'Aigremont, commander of the 4th Army Division from 1913 to 1918. The memorial plaques bear the names of the soldiers killed in action.
To the left of the 4th Army Division monument is a boulder with the inscription of two poems.

Flanders the Lion, "Vibrate old tower
And pair your song with our choirs

The 4th Army Division played an important role in the defence of the Yser Front. During the Battle of the Yser (October 1914) this division defended the infamous bend of Tervaete and in April 1918 the German attack at Merkem was successfully repulsed by the 4th division among others.
This war memorial was restored in 1997 by the Public Buildings Administration.
