The first Irish Catholic settlers arrived in Stafford in 1849 to build the New London Northern Railroad. The first mass was held by the missionary priest Fr. Rev. Luke Daly in November 1849. The land for Saint Edward Church was purchased and in October 1866 construction of their first church began. The cornerstone for Gothic Revival style church is dated 1887 and the church was dedicated on October 14, 1888.

Saint Edward the Confessor Church is built of stone blocks in the form of a cross. The main block has a gable roof and a set of steps leading up to a projecting central Gothic style entrance. Above the entrance is a circular stained glass window. Flanking the entrance are a pair of Gothic style windows. Rising in the center of the main block is a tower with two Gothic style windows and a circular window. The tower is topped by a white belfry and a tapered hexagonal steeple with a cross.

The main block is set between two identical. Each has two Gothic style windows, a circular window and a pyramidal roof. The projection transept completes the cross. The gable ends of the transept have three large Gothic style windows. The center window is slightly larger that the flanking windows.
