Ponta da Piedade is a fantastic stretch of coastline full of rock formations, cliffs and caves, right on the Atlantic Ocean.

You will find limestone rock formations here, which owe their erratic shapes to erosion and weather influences. The coast between Lagos and Albufeira has several stretches of coastline with huge limestone rock formations, but the Ponta da Piedade is very special.

Via a staircase with about 180 steps you can descend to sea level where you can then board a boat to get a closer look at the sheer cliffs and rock formations standing in the sea. Erosion has given the rock here and there bizarre shapes and bridges have even been created under which boats can pass.

Often the sea is very rough and the waves are high, so that the water is also less clear than in calm weather, but that only makes it more spectacular.

Ponta da Piedade is also easily accessible by car, follow the signs. You can park for free in the parking lot at the Ponta da Piedade lighthouse. It's only a small parking lot and it's almost always busy here. It is therefore best to visit Ponta da Piedade early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Then you also have the most beautiful view because of the low-hanging sun.

Although the view from the cliffs is of course beautiful, you still get the best view of Ponta da Piedade from the water. Several boat trips take you along the high cliffs and into the dark caves. The water is very clear and the sun shines beautifully through the holes of the rock formations, so that the light reflects nicely on the water.
Unfortunately, all the times we were here (spring and autumn) it was always too turbulent for the boats to set sail.
