This rock was once part of a cliff wall. When some of the surrounding surface eroded, the remaining rock was left a bit on the edge.

This parking area allows viewing from below. Follow the Abbot Run trail to see it closer. The trail crosses a suspension bridge, passes Rainbow Falls, and has some elevation change. It might be slippy in wet or snowy weather. Proper footwear is recommended and children should be supervised.

Balanced Rock

Perched on the edge of the cliff above Great Trough Creek for thousands of years, Balanced Rock is a geologic remnant caused by erosion. It was once part of a cliff composed of bedrock layers of varying hardness.

Over millenia, freezing and thawing helped loosen the mountainside whle the forces of Great Trough Creek undercut the base, carrying away rock and soil. Slowly, Balanced Rock shifted, slid, and got stuck in its current position while everything around it continued to slide or fall into the valley below.
