This poem by Thomas Edward Brown is at Stan Hywet Hall, off of North Portage Path in Akron, Ohio. It is on a stone plaque near the entrance to the English Garden, to the southwest of the manor house.

The poem, titled "My Garden," reads:

A garden is a lovesome thing, God wot!
Rose plot
Fringed pool
Ferned grot
The veriest school
Of peace and yet the fool
Contends that God is not
Not God! In gardens! When the eve is cool?
Nay but I have a sign
Tis very sure God walks in mine

Thomas Edward Brown (1830-1897) was an educator, poet, and theologian from the Isle of Man, who lived from 1830-1897.

Stan Hywet is a Tudor Revival estate built by F.A. Seiberling, the co-founder of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. It was constructed from 1912 to 1915, and was named Stan Hywet after an Old English phrase for "stone quarry." The estate is now open to the public for tours.
