"Kasteel Doornenburg is een Nederlands kasteel uit de 14e eeuw.

Het kasteel ligt in het oosten van de Betuwe en centraal in Gelderland, nabij het dorp Doornenburg. Het bestaat uit een voorburcht en een hoofdburcht, die zijn verbonden door een smalle houten brug. Het is een van de grootste en best bewaarde kastelen in Nederland.

Op de plaats van het kasteel bevond zich in de 9e eeuw al een versterkt huis, bekend onder de naam Villa Dorenburc. Hieruit is in de 13e eeuw een bescheiden kasteel ontstaan. De huidige hoofdburcht werd in de 14e eeuw gebouwd en in de 15e eeuw voltooid. In de 15e eeuw werd de voorburcht gebouwd. De voorburcht bevat woonvertrekken, een kapel, en een boerderij. Dit laatste is uniek voor een Nederlands kasteel.

Kasteel Doornenburg bleef tot in de 19e eeuw bewoond. Daarna raakte het in verval. In 1936 werd de Stichting tot Behoud van den Doornenburg opgericht, die het kasteel vanaf 1937 liet restaureren. In 1941 was de restauratie voltooid. Aan het eind van de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd het kasteel vrijwel geheel verwoest. Lange tijd werd gedacht dat het was opgeblazen door de Duitsers, maar het bleek in maart 1945 te zijn getroffen door een Brits bombardement. Van 1947 tot 1968 is het kasteel weer geheel opgebouwd."

Doornenburg Castle is a Dutch castle from the 14th century.

The castle is located in the east of the Betuwe and centrally in Gelderland, near the village of Doornenburg. It consists of an outer castle and a main castle, which are connected by a narrow wooden bridge. It is one of the largest and best preserved castles in the Netherlands.

In the 9th century there was already a fortified house on the site of the castle, known as Villa Dorenburc. A modest castle was created from this in the 13th century. The current main castle was built in the 14th century and completed in the 15th century. The outer bailey was built in the 15th century. The outer bailey contains living quarters, a chapel, and a farm. The latter is unique for a Dutch castle.

Doornenburg Castle remained inhabited until the 19th century. After that it fell into disrepair. In 1936 the Foundation for the Preservation of den Doornenburg was established, which had the castle restored from 1937 onwards. Restoration was completed in 1941. At the end of the Second World War, the castle was almost completely destroyed. It was long thought to have been blown up by the Germans, but it turned out to have been hit by a British bombardment in March 1945. The castle was completely rebuilt from 1947 to 1968."
