Between 1940 and 1944, the New Haven Railroad ordered 124 of these all-steel cabooses in bright red livery with white lettering. They were numbered C-510 through C-634 and were built at Pullman’s Worcester, MA plant. Number C-627 was built in 1944 and was one of the last ones delivered.

This caboose’s lineage mirrors the fiasco that was railroading in the northeast during the 1960s and 1970s. In 1969, the New Haven was absorbed into the ill-fated Penn Central which went bankrupt the following year. Eventually the New Haven’s freight operations along with this caboose, became part of Conrail in 1976. By the 1990s, this caboose was adding a nostalgic look to the Berkshire Scenic Railway. Now it’s part of the Danbury Railway Museum’s collection. And, as can be seen in the photo, you are allowed to go inside.
