Rosarium Oudwijk Utrecht
Het rosarium te Utrecht ligt in of liever juist buiten het Wilhelminapark. In de jaren 1887 en 1888 kocht de gemeente Utrecht de buitenplaatsen Het Hogeland en het Oudwijkerveld aan om er aantrekkelijke woningen voor de gegoede burgerij te bouwen. Een park maakte hier deel van uit. De landschapsarchitect H. Copijn won de prijsvraag voor de inrichting van het park, dat ter gelegenheid van de inhuldiging van koningin Wilhelmina in 1898 omgedoopt werd tot Wilhelminapark. In 1913 werd het park uitgebreid met een rosarium naar ontwerp van J.J. Denier van der Gon, sinds 1893 plantagemeester van het park.
Het initiatief kwam van de vereniging ‘Nos Jungunt Rosae’, die in april 1910 een brief zond aan het college van Burgemeester en Wethouders van Utrecht met daarin onder meer de volgende strofe: ‘Zooals uw college mogelijk bekend is, worden in de landen, waar de rozencultuur bloeit, door de leidende rozenvereenigingen met medewerking der Gemeentebesturen Rosaria aangelegd, voorzien van de beste, voor het betreffende klimaat gebleken rozen, welker qualiteiten tevoren op daarvoor speciaal aangelegde proefvelden worden onderzocht.’ en voorts: ‘Onze Vereeniging nu heeft gemeend het voorbeeld van hare zustervereenigingen in het buitenland te moeten volgen, nu de rozencultuur de laatste jaren ook in ons Nederland in zoo sterke mate is vooruit gegaan’
De vereniging vroeg de gemeente een terrein van circa één hectare voor tien jaar in bruikleen te geven. NJR zou dan een plan opstellen, de rozen leveren en het planten en onderhouden ervan verzorgen. De gemeente stemde in met het voorstel, zij het niet zo snel als de vereniging had gehoopt. Met name het ‘rooien van hinderlijke bomen’ leidde tot een verschil van mening, maar in maart 1912 kon met de aanleg van het park worden begonnen. Niet alleen hadden B&W last gegeven tot het rooien van bomen, ook lieten zij een waterleiding en een fontein aanleggen. In het januarinummer van 1913 van Rosarium werd de plattegrond van het Utrechtse rosarium afgebeeld en was een lijst van de te planten rozen opgenomen

Rosarium Oudwijk Utrecht
The Utrecht rosarium is located in, or rather outside of, the Wilhelminapark. In the years 1887 and 1888, the municipality of Utrecht bought the estates Het Hogeland and Oudwijkerveld in order to build attractive housing for the wealthy citizens. A park was part of this. Landscape architect H. Copijn won the competition for the design of the park, which was renamed Wilhelminapark on the occasion of the inauguration of Queen Wilhelmina in 1898. In 1913, a rosary was added to the park, designed by J.J. Denier van der Gon, who had been the park's plantation manager since 1893.
The initiative came from the association 'Nos Jungunt Rosae', which sent a letter to the municipal executive of Utrecht in April 1910, including the following line: As your college may know, in countries where rose culture flourishes, leading rose associations with the cooperation of the city councils plant rosaries, provided with the best roses, which have proven to be suitable for the climate in question, and whose qualities are tested beforehand in specially laid out test fields' and further: 'Our Association has now decided to follow the example of its sister associations abroad, now that the rose culture in our Netherlands has also advanced so much in recent years'.
The association asked the municipality to give a terrain of approximately one hectare on loan for ten years. NJR would then draw up a plan, deliver the roses and take care of planting and maintaining them. The municipality agreed to the proposal, although not as quickly as the association had hoped. In particular, the 'removal of troublesome trees' led to a difference of opinion, but in March 1912, the construction of the park could be started. Not only did the municipal executive order the felling of trees, but they also had a water pipe and a fountain constructed. The January 1913 issue of Rosarium featured a map of the Utrecht rosarium and a list of the roses to be planted.
