On March 11 2011, 15:40 JST, when the tsunami from the Great East Japan Earthquake hit, many residences of Suwa Shrine's shrine parishioners were swept away, and more than 40 people, including residents of Namie and Futaba towns, fled the tsunami and took refuge in the shrine's precincts. It was cold day and they spent a cold night in the sleet.

Suwa shrine was completely damaged but on November 2019, the shrine is reconstructed.
