Nieuwerbrug - Suddenly they are there near the Put van Bodegraven: wooden statues that bear a striking resemblance to the mysterious stone giants on Easter Island. Where do they come from?
The four statues can be found on the southern edge of the Put van Broekhoven. An unsuspecting road user who crosses the Woerden-Bodegraven railway on the Weiweg in Nieuwerbrug and has a good portion of imagination, thinks for a moment that he is heading for Easter Island.
And that is exactly the intention of maker Thomas Stroo. Because this quartet should cause amazement, says the 33-year-old Nieuwerbrugse carpenter. His creations are by no means a coincidence. “There were very tall willow trees here. To prevent them from falling over, I sawed them down with the permission of the owner.”
Cutting it down is one thing, making 'heads' out of it is another. “The museums have been forced to close for a long time, while art can amaze people. I started this last fall and the images are meant to make people think. As a carpenter you have to work quite precisely, but you can be creative with making the images," says the born Rotterdammer.
He and his wife Martha live a stone's throw from the 'sculpture garden' in the house next to the Weijpoort windmill, the house in which Martha grew up as a child. So kind of in the middle of nowhere.
“Yes, it's a fantastic place. You are very aware of life here. We are not one of those terraced housing types that book an all-inclusive holiday twice a year,” Stroo laughs.
Making the wooden cups leaves you wanting more. If possible, Stroo wants to use chainsaws and other tools to make the wood chips fly around more often and to enchant unsuspecting viewers with his creations.
