Gerd Höllige war Polizeikommisar in Bonn-Bad Godesberg. Am 28.07.2002 wurde er zusammen mit einem Kollegen zu einem Einbruchsversuch gerufen. Nach einer Verfolgung stellen die Polizisten den schizophrenen Täter im Kurpark. Dem gelingt es aber bei einer Rangelei, die Waffe von einem der Polizisten zu erlangen, mit der er sofort schießt. Gerd Höllige wird dreimal getroffen und stirbt noch vor Ort, sein Kollege wird schwer verletzt. Gerd Höllige wurde 40 Jahre alt.

2003 wurde an dem Tatort am Rand vom Kurpark ein Denkmal errichtet. Es besteht aus einem großen und mehreren kleineren Granitblöcken und einem herzförmigen Blumenbeet davor. In der großen Granitsäule ist in goldener Schrift eingraviert:

Jedes Jahr treffen sich Kollegen von Gerd Höllige zum Jahrestag an der Gedenkstätte um ihm zu gedenken und an die Tat zu erinnern. Junge Polizisten sollen zudem gewarnt werden, wie gefährlich ihr Beruf sein kann.

Der tragische Vorfall hat bei der Bonner Polizei und weit darüber hinaus zu einer Diskussion über die Ausrüstung von Polizeibeamten geführt. Inzwischen werden sie mit sichereren Pistolenholstern und kugelsicheren Schutzwesten ausgerüstet.
Gerd Höllige was a police commissioner in Bonn-Bad Godesberg. On July 28, 2002, he and a colleague were called to an attempted break-in. After a chase, the police officers find the schizophrenic perpetrator in the Kurpark. However, in a scuffle, he manages to get the gun from one of the police officers, which he shoots immediately. Gerd Höllige is hit three times and dies on the spot, his colleague is seriously injured. Gerd Höllige was 40 years old.

In 2003, a memorial was erected at the crime scene on the edge of the Kurpark. It consists of one large and several smaller granite blocks and a heart-shaped flower bed in front. The large granite column is engraved in gold with (translated to English):

Every year, colleagues of Gerd Höllige meet at the memorial to commemorate him and to remember the crime. Young police officers should also be warned of how dangerous their job can be.

The tragic incident led to a discussion among the Bonn police and far beyond about the equipment of police officers. They are now equipped with more secure pistol holsters and bulletproof body armor.
