Historical Date: 01/01/1871 Historical Name: U.S. Coast Guard Description: In 1871, The federal government established the United States Life-Saving Service (USLSS). This organization was responsible for saving the lives of shipwrecked mariners and passengers. Another Agency, the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service, provided ice breaking on he lakes for safe ship passage. In 1915, the United States Coast Guard was created by combining the cutter Service and Life Saving Service. In 1939, the Coast Guard merged with the Lighthouse Service and took over operation of he Fort Gratiot Light Station. During World War II, the station was used for homeland defense.
