Midden in het centrum, aan de winkelstraat Rijnstraat in Arnhem ligt het huis van de studenten vereniging Quercus. Je loopt er gemakkelijk aan voorbij want het valt bijna niet op omdat het verscholen ligt in een klein smal steegje.
Het enige herkenningspunt is het hek met een metalenplaat met drie haringen erop.
"Wie zijn wij
Studentenvereniging Quercus is van oorsprong een bosbouw- vereniging aansluitend bij Hogeschool Van Hall Larenstein. Sinds de oprichting, 27 oktober 1954, zijn wij gegroeid tot een vereniging met verschillende disputen, jaarclubs, commissies en vele verenigingshuizen.
Wat doen wij
Wij als studentenvereniging hebben als doel onze leden een goede studententijd te brengen. Onze leden kunnen zich op veel verschillende vlakken ontwikkelen naast hun studie. Wij organiseren wekelijkse activiteiten en houden onze tradities in stand.
Waar zijn wij gevestigd
Als studentenvereniging hebben wij ook een mooie sociëteit, genaamd ‘De Drie Haringen’ en gelegen in een historisch pand in het hartje van Arnhem. Onze verenigingshuizen liggen verderop in het schone Velp. Ook hier bevind zich Hogeschool van Hall Larenstein."

Achtergrond informatie
"Achter het hek met 3 haringen is de sociëteit van studentenvereniging Quercus. Die sociëteit heet – hoe kan het ook anders – De Drie Haringen. Die naam hebben zij niet zelf bedacht.
Schonevaardersgilde
Het pand waarin de sociëteit te vinden is, blijkt een van de oudste van Arnhem te zijn. Het werd in 1403 opgebouwd uit de puinhopen van een kerk die in de grote stadsbrand van 1364 verloren is gegaan. Destijds was het haringgebouw in handen van de Schonevaardersgilde. Die gilde had in haar wapen drie haringen afgebeeld. Voorheen was de gevel van het huis dan ook versierd met drie vergulde haringen, maar die schijnen verloren zijn te gaan. Dezelfde gouden haringen zijn te vinden op andere panden van de voormalige gilde, onder andere in Deventer.
Verboden toegang
Het huis ligt op privéterrein. Op de gevel zijn een leeuwenkop en schapenkop te zien zijn die symbool staan voor liefdadigheid. De gevel van De Drie Haringen behoort tot de Nederlandse Rijksmonumenten. De huidige gevel is 19e-eeuws maar bevat een zevental natuurstenen gebeeldhouwde maskers naar de stijl van architect Hendrick de Keyser en een gevelsteen met drie haringen.
Geschiedenis
Jarenlang was De Drie Haringen in gebruik als pakhuis, net als veel andere panden in de omgeving. Rond 1900 verzakten de buitengevels helaas toen men moest heien voor een naastgelegen fabriek. De gevel ging voor een groot deel verloren maar de oude gevelstenen zijn voor een groot deel teruggeplaatst.
Tot ongeveer 1932 vond je in het Haringhuis een leerlooierij. Vervolgens werd het een glashandel. Het bijzondere gebouw heeft zelfs nog even dienstgedaan als fietsenstalling.
sociëteit De Drie Haringen
In de jaren 70 van de vorige eeuw vond je in De Drie Haringen een café genaamd De Zaag. In 1987 kwam het echter in handen van een aantal studenten en werd het omgetoverd tot de sociëteit De Drie Haringen. In 1999 is een deel van het pand in brand gevlogen waarbij het flink is beschadigd. Het schijnt dat de brandweer destijds het adres Drieharingenplaats niet kon vinden omdat het officiële adres de Rijnstraat is. De binnenplaats voor het pand wordt echter de Drieharingenplaats genoemd."

Right in the center, on the Rijnstraat shopping street in Arnhem, is the home of the Quercus student association. You can easily walk past it because it is hardly noticeable because it is hidden in a small narrow alley.
The only landmark is the fence with a metal plate with three herring on it.

Quercus student association was originally a forestry association affiliated with Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences. Since the foundation, October 27, 1954, we have grown into an association with various fraternities, year clubs, committees and many association houses.

We as a student association aim to bring our members a good student time. Our members can develop themselves in many different areas in addition to their studies. We organize weekly activities and maintain our traditions.

Cleaners' Guild
The building in which the club can be found turns out to be one of the oldest in Arnhem. It was built in 1403 from the ruins of a church that was lost in the great city fire of 1364. At the time, the herring building was in the hands of the Schonevaardersgilde. That guild had three herrings depicted in its coat of arms. Previously, the facade of the house was decorated with three gilded pegs, but these seem to have been lost. The same golden pegs can be found on other buildings of the former guild, including in Deventer.
Forbidden access
The house is on private property. A lion's head and a sheep's head can be seen on the facade, which symbolize charity. The facade of De Drie Haringen belongs to the Dutch National Monuments. The current facade is 19th century but contains seven natural stone sculpted masks in the style of architect Hendrick de Keyser and a gable stone with three pegs.
History
For years De Drie Haringen was used as a warehouse, just like many other buildings in the area. Unfortunately, around 1900 the outer facades subsided when they had to drive a pile for an adjacent factory. The facade was largely lost, but the old facing bricks have largely been replaced.
Until about 1932 you could find a tannery in the Haringhuis. It then became a glass trade. The special building even served as a bicycle shed for a while.
Society The Three Haringen
In the 1970s you found a cafe called De Zaag in De Drie Haringen. In 1987, however, it came into the hands of a number of students and it was transformed into the De Drie Haringen society. In 1999 part of the building caught fire, causing considerable damage. It seems that the fire brigade at the time could not find the address Drieharingenplaats because the official address is the Rijnstraat. However, the courtyard in front of the building is called the Drieharingenplaats."
