The rural parish of Dun is situated in the Angus countryside halfway between the town of Brechin to the west, and the coastal town of Montrose to the east. It consists of the National Trust owned House of Dun, where the first parish church was built until 1833 when a new church was built the following year a kilometre to the west. Designed by Robert Dalgarno for Lady Margaret Erskine, the 17th Laird of Dun, it is a simple rectangular building with a pinnacled tower on the east gable.

The churchyard was constructed at the same time as the opening of the new building, and surrounds the church, with a newer section extending to the north.

The church fell out of use recently and is currently up for sale
