De mysterieuze graffiti-kunstenaar KBTR – die je ongetwijfeld kent van het gelijknamige figuurtje dat overal en nergens opduikt in Utrecht – heeft een drieluik gespoten in de gang van de polikliniek van het St. Antonius Ziekenhuis in Leidsche Rijn. Als je een beetje oplet, zie je hem overal: de Utrechtse Kabouter. Het graffitifiguur hoort bij Utrecht zoals de Dom. Over de maker van dit wezentje – die zichzelf KBTR noemt – weten we overigens niet veel, want hij houdt zijn identiteit strikt geheim. Wel weten we dat hij soms in opdracht werkt van bedrijven of organisaties.

Voor veel medewerkers van het ziekenhuis zelf was de muurschildering van KBTR een complete verrassing. Hoofd communicatie van het Antonius Ziekenhuis Tanja Hermans zegt tegen het AD Utrechts Nieuwsblad dat ‘het een geheime operatie is geweest.’ “Zes nachten lang heeft KBTR aan het drieluik gewerkt. Woensdag 5 augustus (2018) was de muurschildering klaar. Onze interieuradviseur heeft een afspraak met KBTR kunnen regelen. Ik wist nergens van. Veel mensen hebben het geheim gehouden.”

Vanaf deze week bewonder je het Utrechtse icoon dus ook in het St. Antonius Ziekenhuis. Op het drieluik spot je de figuutjes in typisch Utrechtse settings. Zo zie je een kabouter in de Servetstraat die duidelijk een toerist in Utrecht voor moet stellen en een kabouterkoppel in een waterfiets op de gracht.

The mysterious graffiti artist KBTR – whom you undoubtedly know from the eponymous figure that pops up everywhere and nowhere in Utrecht – has painted a triptych in the corridor of the outpatient clinic of the St. Antonius Hospital in Leidsche Rijn. If you pay attention, you see him everywhere: the Utrecht Gnome. The graffiti figure belongs to Utrecht like the Dom. We don't know much about the maker of this creature – who calls himself KBTR – because he keeps his identity strictly secret. We do know that he sometimes works for companies or organizations.

For many hospital employees, the KBTR mural came as a complete surprise. Tanja Hermans, head of communications at the Antonius Hospital, told AD Utrechts Nieuwsblad that "it was a secret operation." "KBTR worked on the triptych for six nights. The mural was ready on Wednesday 5 August (2018). Our interior consultant was able to arrange an appointment with KBTR. I didn't know about anything. A lot of people have kept it a secret.”

From this week you can admire the Utrecht icon in the St. Antonius Hospital. In the triptych you spot the figures in typical Utrecht settings. For example, you see a gnome in the Servetstraat who clearly must represent a tourist in Utrecht and a gnome couple in a pedal boat on the canal.
