"Vanaf de 11de eeuw begon aan de Graslei en de Korenlei de haven te bloeien. In 1530 kocht de Gilde van de Vrije Schippers het pand aan de Graslei van de Molenaarsgilde. Het pand is destijds voorzien van een nieuwe, stenen voorgevel in Balegemse Zandsteen. De voorgevel is een voorbeeld van Brabantse Gotiek. Kenmerkend aan het gebouw zijn de lichtgetinte Balegemse zandstenen, de rijke en gedetailleerde versiering, de wapenschilden (ook van Keizer Karel) en de torentjes. Voor de wereldtentoonstelling van 1913 werd het pand grondig gerestaureerd. De traphal en de zalen op de begane grond werden vernieuwd in Neogotische stijl met gedetailleerde houtgesneden gravures en figuratieve muurschilderingen."

"De Leie aan de Gras- en Korenlei was van de 10e tot de 19e eeuw een belangrijke binnenhaven voor Gent. Daarna werden de havenactiviteiten naar het noorden van de stad. Aan de Gras- en Korenlei bouwden verschillende gildes hun gildehuizen.
Het Gildehuis van de Vrije Schippers is een pareltje aan de Graslei en kent een rijke geschiedenis. Van het midden van de 16e tot in de tweede helft van de 17e eeuw was het eigendom van de Gilde van de Vrije Schippers. Het gebouw in Brabantse gotiek wisselde daarna een aantal keren van eigenaar en functie. Op de eerste verdieping zie je het devies van Keizer Karel “Plus oultre” (steeds verder) en de wapenschilden van de gebieden waarover hij regeerde.
Het gebouw is een van de best bewaarde en oudste gebouwen in de oude haven van Gent en is sinds 1943 beschermd als monument.
Het havenbedrijf North Sea Port kocht oude gildehuis in 2011, restaureerde het en maakte het toegankelijk voor bezoekers. Je kunt zeggen dat de haven een beetje terugkwam naar haar geboorteplaats. Het gebouw is nu gekend als Havenhuis. Er is een tentoonstelling over de werking van North Sea port en op zaterdagnamiddag kun je het gebouw bezoeken met een gids."

"The Leie on the Gras- and Korenlei was an important inland port for Ghent from the 10th to the 19th century. After that, port activities moved to the north of the city. Various guilds built their guild houses on the Gras- and Korenlei.
The Guild House of the Free Schippers is a gem on the Graslei and has a rich history. From the middle of the 16th to the second half of the 17th century it belonged to the Guild of the Free Schippers. The building in Brabant Gothic style subsequently changed owner and function a number of times. On the first floor you can see the motto of Emperor Charles "Plus oultre" (more and more) and the coats of arms of the areas over which he ruled.
The building is one of the best preserved and oldest buildings in the old port of Ghent and has been protected as a monument since 1943.
The Port Authority North Sea Port bought the old guildhall in 2011, restored it and made it accessible to visitors. You can say that the port kind of returned to its birthplace.
