On the edge of the center of the city is this fountain with a statue of a shoemaker. The statue is called: Klever Schüsterken.

Many decades ago, the Cleves region was “shoe city” number one. The " tradition of the stitching awls " was widespread amongst craftsmen, therefor this "Schüsterken" on the bridge, created by Joseph Brüx, recalls to the whistling shoemaking companions on their way to work. The small "Schüsterken" is also called Bältermann, as well as "Spuckmännchen" (spit-lad) due to the fact it is a fountain.

The Klever Schuesterken created in 1951 is reminiscent of the shoe tradition in Kleve. More than 50 shoe factories with several thousand employees have been based in Kleve since 1878. Thanks to the well-known "Elefanten" brand, Kleve became the center of the children's shoe industry.
