The memorial takes the form of a large elegant four-sided stone cenotaph on a single step, with protruding scroll supports at each corner. A bronze Yorkshire rose is fixed to the top of the south face inscription. The cenotaph stands on a paved area within a small garden, beside the front main entrance of the West Yorkshire Police Headquarters building.

The inscription on the front faces is as follows.
ERECTED
BY THEIR COMRADES
IN MEMORY OF
THE MEN OF THE
WEST RIDING
CONSTABULARY
WHO FELL IN
THE GREAT WAR
1914 - 1919

AT THE GOING DOWN
OF THE SUN, AND IN
THE MORNING WE
WILL REMEMBER THEM

The last part of the inscription is the last two lines of the fourth stanza of the poem 'For the Fallen' written by war poet Laurence Binyon. The full four lines of the stanza have been adopted by the Royal British Legion as an Exhortation for ceremonies of Remembrance to commemorate fallen Servicemen and women.

The cenotaph was unveiled by: County Alderman P.H. Booth and was dedicated by Canon McLeod at a special service in Wakefield Cathedral.
