Situé à deux kilomètres au sud de l’abbaye de Nouaillé, sur la route de Nieuil, le prieuré de Availles est documenté dès le début du XIIe siècle (en 1120 et 1257). De l’époque romane reste la chapelle, tandis que le reste du complexe a été restructuré au lendemain de la fin des guerres de religion. Il ne subsiste aujourd'hui qu'une petite chapelle, le portail, la sacristie communiquant avec la chapelle et un bâtiment conventuel qui servait de dortoir pour les moines à l'étage et de salle capitulaire au rez-de-chaussée, dont on ne peut voir que les extérieurs
A l’occasion de sa restructuration le prieuré fut fortifié et muni d’une tour de défense et d’un pont mobile. Au même temps, d’autres éléments allaient augmenter son aspect monumental, tel la réalisation du portail flamboyant qui, encore à nos jours, en marque le seuil d’accès.
Une note manuscrite reconduit à Raoul du Fou, abbé de Nouaillé de 1468 à 1511, le relèvement du complexe monastique. , c’est encore l’héraldique qui confirme cette attribution et en aide à préciser la chronologie. Encadrée par des hauts pinacles et par une gable ornés d’éléments végétaux très soignée, la porte conserve un décor héraldique remarquable (voir détail avec les liens en sources)

Located two kilometers south of the abbey of Nouaillé, on the road to Nieuil, the priory of Availles is documented from the beginning of the 12th century (in 1120 and 1257). On the occasion of its restructuring, the priory was fortified and equipped with a defense tower and a movable bridge. At the same time, other elements would increase its monumental aspect, such as the creation of the flamboyant portal which, even today, marks the access threshold.
A handwritten note conveys to Raoul du Fou, abbot of Nouaillé from 1468 to 1511, the raising of the monastic complex. , it is still heraldry that confirms this attribution and helps to specify its chronology. Framed by high pinnacles and a gable decorated with very neat plant elements, the door retains a remarkable heraldic decoration (see details with links in sources)
