The large village of Abernethy lies six miles to the south-east of the Scottish city of Perth and is famous for its 74 foot tall round tower which was built in the 11th century by the Culdee monks of the village. A few yards to the south is the site of the markets that would have been carried out in the village centre. A town house was built on this site, and when it was demolished it became the site of the war memorial which was unveiled on June 19th 1921.

The memorial was designed as a mercat cross dated from 1458 on an eight step base. Two bronze plates are fixed on the south side with the original plate bearing the names of the 30 men lost from the Great War, and a second added later underneath with the 8 names from WWII. The inscription and names, ranks and units read as follows:

'THIS CROSS WAS ERECTED TO THE HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR OF THE YEARS 1914-1919
