Matt Dillon was Marshall of Dodge City for the entire run of Gunsmoke - nine years as a CBS Radio series, twenty years as a CBS television series, and several subsequent movies. This life-sized bronze statue depicts Marshall Dillon as portrayed by actor James Arness. Dillon is wearing a jacket, boots, and hat typical of the 1870s west, with his hands folded at his waist and with a six-shooter holstered at his side. According to fan web sites, Marshall Dillon shot a total of 165 people (more than actually died in all of the known "Wild West" gunfights combined) and himself was injured by gunfire 45 times.
