In the center of the city you will find many churches, including the church 'Iglesia San Juan del Hospital'. A church with many influences, with Romanesque, Arabic and Christian elements. This church is located in the La Xerea district and is easy to reach, because it is only a few streets away from the famous 'Plaza de la Reina'.
The Church of San Juan del Hospital was founded in the year 1238 by the military order of the Knights Hospitallers of 'San Juan de Jerusalén'. This order is today called the 'Order of Malta'. San Juan del Hospital is the oldest church in Valencia after the 'Reconquista'. The Reconquista is a Spanish word for "reconquest." They then mean the reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula, which was occupied by Arabs for 800 years in the Middle Ages. A few Christian kingdoms have managed to drive out these "Moors" and reclaim the reconquest and their own lands. After Valencia was regained, this is the first church built next to the Xerea gate by King Don Jaime I. This church was built here, near his camp, to honor and thank all the efforts of this king's order for the reconquest of valencia. Finally, the king entrusted the church to the religious-military Order of San Juan de Jerusalén.
