Roanoke - ARSR-3 Search Radar - Bedford, Virginia - Ground Based Air Navigation Support Structures on Waymarking.com

Located on the top of Apple Orchard Mountain is the remains of Bedford Air Force Station. It can be accessed by walking up the driveway from the Blue Ridge Parkway or from the Appalachian Trail. It has been converted to an FAA site, so some of the facility is fenced off from the public. Some of it is visible from the Parkway, but to see it up and close requires a 1.5 mile round trip.

Currently an active FAA site, operating an ARSR-3 search radar. Site also now known as Roanoke. This now-FAA long-range radar site is now data-tied into the Joint Surveillance System (post 9/11)
