Il y a 37 millions d'années, durant le Stampien, un climat chaud et tropical règne sur une vaste mer. Elle est pleine de poissons et de méduses, bordées de palmiers, d’acacias et de forêt dense. Apporté par les rivières qui l’alimentent, du sable se concentre dans le fond de la mer Stampienne. Des millions d’années passent et la mer finit par disparaitre, un marais s’installe. Dans les profondes fractures géologiques se glisse, sur les anciens sables, de la silice. La cimentation des deux éléments donne le grès.
